Before You Think “I Like It,” Your Brain Has Already Decided

Your customer judges sound before a thought can form

Picture something simple. Someone hears your brand's jingle in a radio spot. Before they can think "nice" or "not my thing," plenty has already happened inside their brain.

The sound wave hit subcortical structures. It fired an emotional response. It shifted hormone levels. All of it before any conscious judgment.

That's not a metaphor. That's the order in which the nervous system actually works. And it's exactly why sound is such a powerful brand tool - it plays on a level that visual advertising reaches late, or never reaches at all.

For a marketer, that means one thing. Your audience reacts to how your brand sounds before they can explain the reaction. And if the reaction comes first, it's worth knowing what they're reacting to.

Two routes in the brain: fast emotion, slow logic

The brain processes sound along two parallel tracks. The first is fast and subcortical. It runs straight to the structures that handle emotion and threat response. It fires instantly, outside conscious control.

The second track is slower. That's the cortical route - where conscious judgment, analysis and rationalization live. This is where "I like this music" or "this brand sounds serious" gets formed.

The order matters. Emotion arrives first, judgment second. Which is why a well-designed brand sound can set a predisposition before the listener even starts wondering what they think of the brand.

Visual advertising works on emotion too. But an image is easier to dodge - you can look away, scroll past, close your eyes. Sound gets through even when nobody is watching the screen. It's the channel that keeps working while your customer is busy doing something else.

Think about everyday moments. Someone scrolling on their phone hears a spot from the next room. Someone on hold listens to a brand's music. Someone walks into a store where a playlist is running. In every one of those moments the eyes are occupied elsewhere - and the ears are on duty.

That's a structural advantage, not a cosmetic one. Sound doesn't need attention to do its job. It only needs to reach the ear - the rest happens below the threshold of conscious decision.

The chemistry of trust: what sound does to your hormones

The emotional response to music has a biochemical dimension. We're not talking about a vague "pleasant impression" - we're talking about measurable changes in the body.

Researchers led by Ooishi showed that music raises oxytocin levels measured in saliva while simultaneously lowering cortisol. Oxytocin is the hormone tied to trust and bonding. Cortisol is the stress hormone.

Translate that into brand terms. The right sound can physiologically nudge a listener toward trust and relaxation. Not because they decided to feel that way, but because their body responded that way.

No static visual can build that foundation. A logo can be judged coolly, at arm's length. Sound acts before the judgment shows up. Which is why brands that take their sound seriously win an advantage on a level their competitors aren't even thinking about.

The evidence a survey will never show you

Here's where it gets interesting. If sound works below the threshold of awareness, how do you measure it at all? A survey may not be enough - because customers report what they're aware of, not what's actually happening inside them.

Bosshard and Walla demonstrated exactly that. Their team conditioned associations with brands, then checked the effect two ways. On one side, self-reported ratings and an implicit association test. On the other, brain activity recorded with EEG.

The result speaks for itself. Self-reports didn't budge. The association test found no difference either. EEG did. The signal at the frontal electrodes picked up a trace of conditioning that participants never reported.

For a marketer, that's a hard lesson. If you ask customers in a survey whether they like your brand's sound, you may be measuring the wrong thing. A stated opinion is the tip. The real response sits deeper.

That doesn't make qualitative research worthless. It means sound has to be measured with tools that match how it actually works - at the level of emotion, not opinion.

Emotion is the bridge between sound and brand

So how do we know that subcortical response translates into anything commercial? That an emotion triggered by sound actually changes how a brand is perceived?

Kemp and colleagues answered that. Their work showed that emotion acts as the mediator. A sonic logo triggers an emotion, and that emotion carries through into the brand experience. These aren't two separate phenomena - they're one chain.

In other words, sound doesn't act on the brand directly. It acts through the emotion it stirs up. Design the wrong emotion and you damage the brand. Design the right one and you amplify exactly what you're trying to communicate.

That changes how you think about sound. A sonic logo isn't a decorative flourish at the end of a spot. It's the carrier of an emotion that builds a relationship with the brand. Which is why you can't design one on gut feel - you have to know which emotion it should carry, and then verify that it actually carries it.

Take a simple case. A premium brand wants to sound calm and self-assured. If its sound creates tension or urgency instead, the message and the emotion pull apart. The listener will feel the mismatch, even if they can't put a name to it.

So designing a brand sound starts with a question about emotion, not melody. First you decide what the brand should make people feel. Only then do you look for the sound that does it - and check whether it really does.

This response is universal

You could ask whether all of this is just a matter of culture. Maybe reacting to music is about upbringing, trends, familiarity with a genre?

Partly, yes. But something deeper sits underneath. Egermann's team compared psychophysiological responses to music among Canadians and among the Mebenzele Pygmies of Central Africa - people from completely different sonic worlds.

The basic bodily responses turned out to be the same. The emotional response to music has a universal dimension, written into human physiology rather than into one specific culture.

For a brand operating across multiple markets, that's an important conclusion. The foundation of our response to sound is shared. Culture layers on top of it, but doesn't replace it. A well-designed brand sound has a real shot at working across borders.
